PASSING THROUGH ITS OPPOSITE

a solo exhibit by Janice Liuson-Young

"It belongs to the imperfection of everything human that man can only attain his desire by passing through its opposite.” — Søren Kierkegaard

"In Passing Through Its Opposite, her forthcoming one-woman show at Village Art Gallery, Janice Liuson-Young takes up a Kierkegaardian proposition: that to arrive at what the heart most deeply longs for, one must first pass through its negation.

Departing from her signature non-representational gestures, Liuson-Young dissects her own paintings on paper, fragmenting them into cuttings that are then reassembled into collaged compositions. What might otherwise be dismissed as remnants or discards are reconfigured into elements of renewed meaning, forming composite pictorial fields that meditate on transformation, loss, and recovery."
